Timeline for Setting Up Business Energy

How long it takes depends on whether the premises already has an active supply. Here's what to expect.

1

Active Supply — A Few Days to Two Weeks

If you're taking over premises with electricity and gas already connected, setting up your account is straightforward. Contact your chosen supplier with the MPRN/GPRN, a meter reading, your business details, and payment information. Take a time-stamped photo of the meter on the day you move in. Notify your supplier at least 28 days in advance where possible.

2

Disconnected Under Two Years — Reconnection

If the supply has been disconnected for six months to two years, you'll need an ETCI Completion Certificate from a RECI-registered electrical contractor before ESB Networks will reconnect. This adds a few weeks to the process depending on contractor availability.

3

New Connection — 10 to 15 Weeks

For premises disconnected over two years or brand-new builds, ESB Networks treats this as a new connection. They target a quote within 15 business days and connection within 60 business days of acceptance. You'll need planning permission, ordnance survey maps, site plans, your Eircode, and load/capacity details.

4

Gas Connection — 6 to 14 Weeks

New gas connections through Gas Networks Ireland follow a seven-step process: online enquiry, site survey, installer engagement, quotation, pipe installation, Declaration of Conformance, and meter fitting. Standard SME connections up to 15 metres cost €249.70 including VAT.

Documents You'll Need

MPRN (electricity) and/or GPRN (gas) from the premises
Recent or day-of-transfer meter reading
IBAN for direct debit setup
Business name, address, and CRO number
Planning permission and site plans (new connections only)
ETCI Completion Certificate (reconnections only)

Important: If you move into premises without arranging a contract, you'll be placed on deemed rates—typically the most expensive tariff available. Electric Ireland is assigned as the default supplier. You can switch away immediately, but you'll pay above-market rates until you do.
