How Irish Business Energy Pricing Works
Business energy bills in Ireland are more complex than they look. Here's what actually makes up the number on your invoice.
Unit Rates
This is the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity or gas you actually use. For Irish businesses, electricity unit rates currently range from 15 to 35 c/kWh depending on your consumption volume, meter type, and contract terms. SMEs typically pay 25–28 c/kWh on day rates and 14.5–17.5 c/kWh at night. Larger businesses with negotiated contracts pay less—around 20–23 c/kWh during the day.
Standing Charges
A daily fixed charge regardless of how much energy you use. For small businesses on DG5 meters, this is roughly €0.35–€1.00 per day. Larger businesses on DG6 meters face €3.28–€6.50 per day—adding up to over €2,000 a year before you've used a single unit. Standing charges vary significantly between suppliers, which is why they're a key part of any proper comparison.
DUoS (Distribution Use of System) Charges
These fund ESB Networks' distribution infrastructure. Your DUoS band—DG5 for smaller businesses, DG6 and above for larger ones—determines how much you pay. The rates are set by the CRU each October. Being on the wrong band is one of the most common and expensive billing errors we see, sometimes costing businesses thousands per year.
PSO Levy
The Public Service Obligation levy funds renewable energy generation in Ireland. The amount changes annually and is calculated based on your MIC. Small businesses currently pay around €5.65 per month. Medium and large businesses pay per kVA of MIC—so if your MIC is set too high, you overpay on this charge as well as on capacity.
Why Rates Vary So Much Between Suppliers
Wholesale energy costs account for roughly 10–12 c/kWh of your bill, with regulated pass-through charges adding approximately 14.6 c/kWh on top. Suppliers can only really compete on the wholesale margin and their own operating costs. That margin is where the differences sit—and in 2025, those differences have been significant. Some suppliers held prices steady while others raised theirs by 7–13.5%.
This is exactly why comparing on unit rate alone doesn't work. Two suppliers quoting similar unit rates can look very different once you factor in standing charges, contract length, exit fees, and how they handle DUoS pass-through. We compare on total annual cost so you see the full picture.
